Verify Word and Outlook support
Distinguish active hosts, client-dependent features, and capabilities requiring Microsoft Graph.
In this article
Current public hosts
- Word
- The active pane uses document, paragraph, and selection context and can execute supported Word operations.
- Outlook
- The active pane uses email context in read or compose mode, attachments, and confirmed project context when available.
- Other hosts
- The presence of internal types for Excel, PowerPoint, AutoCAD, Revit, or Teams is not a statement of user support.
Matrix to maintain by release
- Tested Office client and platform.
- Approved minimum version or channel.
- Word read and edit behavior, including supported operation and content types.
- Outlook read and compose behavior, including attachment and body limits.
- Features requiring Microsoft Graph, administrator consent, or additional policy.
- Known limitations requiring a real-client test.
Practical guidance
The active add-in shell routes Word and Outlook; other host names in internal contracts are not supported user entry points. Within Outlook, read and compose modes expose different capabilities. Within Word, a supported operation still depends on the document state and the client’s native handling of its content format.
Advanced tips
Qualify the exact combination you intend to use: host, platform, version, mode and operation. Record native Word save/reopen checks and actual Outlook draft behavior separately from browser tests; neither proves the other environment’s fidelity.
